Logitech Z-560 Speaker System
Review Date: 10th May 2002
Reviewed By: Leigh "Grim Reaper" Gardiner
Product: Logitech Z-560 Speaker System
Rating: 92%
Manufacturer: Logitech

Testing

Test system specs:

  • AMD T-Bird 1GHz OCed to 1.4
  • EpoX 8KTA3
  • 320meg SDRAM
  • Hercules Fortissimo II Sound Card
  • 40gig Western Digital HDD

    Music:

Compared to my old powerful, yet low quality speakers, I was amazed at the clarity of the Logitech Z-560’s. In fact, it actually hurt my ears until I managed to get used to the clear sound that was being emitted from all around me.

They can handle all types of music very well from DJ’s to Country. All instruments and voice are of high quality/clarity, and the only problem now is how high to encode those mp3’s, because 128kbit just doesn’t cut it with such high quality / clear sounding speakers. Ok, so playing the music at reasonable volumes sounds unreal, I wonder how they’ll go at loud and VERY loud volumes…lets find out!

With the volume level at half way the music is loud, clear and undistorted. The sound is just as clear as it was at lower volumes…louder you say? As the volume is increased, I was amazed that there was no distortion! In fact, I was able to crank it up to approximately ¾ volume before any distortion could be heard. If you’re after speakers that fill a room with music, and fill it damn well, these are the ones!

The sub plays every thump well. It doesn’t distort, even at the full (In the actual bass testers I’m not game enough to put the bass up full because I’ll probably blow it!) it doesn’t distort. I’ve heard people complain that there is too much bass at the 0 level but I don’t see what their on about. Yes, there is still a little bass when at 0, but not enough to annoy anybody. Even if it did get on your nerves you can turn it down via software. Now I did mention I love my bass, and let em tell you, I think I’m in love!

    Gaming:

From now on, if you hear someone yell “GRENADE” in the game, you’re going to be diving for cover! Rifle shots and grenade shots are… how should I put it, realistic? It’s as if you can hear the bullets fly past your head. Each grenade or rocket, the sub makes sure you feel it! The floor shakes and rocks on every explosion, I swear I was actually in the Q3A/Counter-Strike levels. Max Payne kicks absolute arse, and if anybody used to play Dark Reign I strongly suggest buying a set of these speakers just to hear the shockwaves, it sounds like they’re coming straight for you! I was amazed at how much these speakers ‘pull you into the game’!

    Bass Testers:

This is where testing becomes interesting. The ceiling light above me seriously shakes and vibrates! Drinks on the bench in front of me jump! If I have the bass control right up, I have the volume right down because even then these testers make the room move. I couldn’t bare myself to turn the volume/bass right up on the bass testers, as I was afraid the sheer amount of bass would kill the sub. The most I’ve gotten it up to before I felt unsafe because of the amount of bass was just under ½ way. Maybe that’ll give you an idea on how much bass this thing gives out!

Sorry for anybody that was after a DVD review but I don’t have a DVD player so I couldn’t write up what I thought about them in that situation.
